Ricky Zieba: A Young Athlete’s Legacy of Resilience and Living Life to the Fullest
A Life Cut Short
In the world of sports, some stories transcend the game. They are tales of heart, of character, and of a spirit that shines so brightly it can never be extinguished. The story of Ricky Zieba is one such tale. A promising young linebacker for the Concordia Stingers, his life was tragically cut short at the age of 22, but his legacy of resilience, passion, and living life to the fullest continues to inspire all who hear it.
The Making of an Athlete
From a young age, Ricky Zieba was a natural athlete. Growing up in Hudson, Quebec, he excelled in multiple sports, from his time with the Lakeshore Cougars football association to being an accomplished swimmer with the Pointe Claire Swim Club. His athletic journey eventually led him to Vanier College, where he honed his skills on the football field before joining the Concordia Stingers.
A Natural Leader on the Field
As a linebacker for the Stingers, Zieba quickly made his mark. In his rookie season in 2008, he played in eight regular season games, recording 20 solo tackles, seven assists, a sack, and an interception. His performance earned him the title of the team’s outstanding rookie on defence. But his impact went far beyond statistics. Teammates and coaches remember him as a natural leader, a player with a good heart, a strong work ethic, and a passion that was contagious. “Ricky was a natural leader,” said offensive lineman Anthony Barrette. “He was the type of guy that brought everyone together.”
Facing Unimaginable Loss
Just four months before his own passing, Ricky faced an unimaginable tragedy. While on vacation in Florida, his girlfriend suffered a fatal heart failure while they were jogging together. In the face of such profound grief, Ricky turned to the one thing that had always given him strength: football.
Finding Strength in the Game
His father, Richard Zieba, recalled, “It was the only way he could get over his grief. This was his second family.” The football team rallied around him, providing a source of support and purpose. It was during this difficult time that Ricky adopted the philosophy that would come to define his legacy: “You never know when you’re going to leave this world, so live fully in every moment.”
The Tragic Accident
On June 24, 2009, just weeks after his 22nd birthday, Ricky was driving to his family’s cottage in St. Adèle when he is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel. His car went off the road and was not discovered for 17 hours. His brother, Jason, was the one who found him, and in a final, heartbreaking moment, was able to tell him he loved him one last time. Ricky passed away shortly after.
A Community Mourns
The news of Ricky’s death sent shockwaves through the Concordia community. Teammates gathered at the athletic complex to mourn and support one another. At the Stingers’ home opener that September, 3,000 fans rose to their feet for a moment of silence as Ricky’s family was presented with his framed number 9 jersey.
Project Zieba and Lasting Impact
In a testament to the impact Ricky had on those around him, his friends and family created “Project Zieba,” a fundraising initiative that raised over $7,900 for the Stingers football program. The community’s outpouring of support was a reflection of the love and respect they had for the young athlete.
Living His Philosophy
Ricky Zieba’s story is a powerful reminder to cherish every moment. His teammate, Anthony Barrette, said it best: “We should all learn from this to live life like he did. He was so strong, and he cherished every moment of life.” His smile could light up a room, and his ability to connect with people was a gift.
Ricky Zieba’s Enduring Legacy
Though his time was short, Ricky Zieba’s legacy endures. He is remembered not just as a talented football player, but as a young man who faced tragedy with resilience, who inspired his teammates with his leadership, and who taught everyone around him the importance of living life to the fullest. His story continues to be a source of inspiration, a reminder that even in the face of loss, the human spirit can shine brightly.
